Every Wednesday, I feature interesting news, trivia, and anything related to books and reading.  Today’s Good To Know Wednesday is an article titled “New Dan Brown novel, Inferno, to be published in May” by Mark Medley.  This news is so exciting!  Aren’t you excited?  It has been too long since his last novel, The Lost Symbol.  I can’t wait for this new novel which is titled Inferno.  Oooooh.  Sounds fiery.  I hope you enjoy today’s article as much as I did.

New Dan Brown novel, Inferno, to be published in May

In the 18 months or so after Dan Brown’s breakout novel, The Da Vinci Code, was published in 2003, it was normal to see copies of the book everywhere — on the subway, in coffee shops, on bedside tables. The book, a conspiracy-laden thriller which posited that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had married and had children, was a cultural phenomenon, selling over 80 million copies around the world and spawning a big-budget movie starring Tom Hanks.

Brown’s 2009 follow-up, The Lost Symbol, was one of the most heavily-hyped books of the last decade; it sold over one million copies on its first day, though, in the end, couldn’t match the cultural ubiquitousness of The Da Vinci Code, with “just” 30 million copies in print.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Brown will publish a new novel on May 14.

Once again, the novel features Harvard “symbologist” Robert Langdon, who is “drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces,” according to the press release.

The book’s title is still unknown, though not for long; the book’s publishers — Doubleday will release the book in North America — are harnessing the power of social media – Facebook, Brown’s website, and the Today show’s website — in advance of its unveiling; basically, the more people who write about it the faster the title will be revealed.

“Dan Brown’s enthusiasm for puzzles, codes and symbols is a passion shared by his readers,” said Suzanne Herz, Senior Vice President, Publishing for Doubleday, in a press release. “Our aim is to harness that passion and use it as a catalyst to reveal the new title.”

Update: Well, that was fast — the new novel is called Inferno.

A second press release went out to media a few minutes after our initial post, revealing additional details about the novel, which will have an initial print run of four million copies. The book, which is set in Italy, revolves around Dante’s Inferno.

“Although I studied Dante’s Inferno as a student, it wasn’t until recently, while researching in Florence, that I came to appreciate the enduring influence of Dante’s work on the modern world,” said Brown in the press release. “With this new novel, I am excited to take readers on a journey deep into this mysterious realm…a landscape of codes, symbols, and more than a few secret passageways.”

I’ll look forward to reading this. I’m also very excited for the sequel to “The Shining” that’s coming out this year.

  2. This sounds good! My favorite of his was Angels and Demons, but it probably helped that I was IN Italy when I read it! My husband had read it before so when we planned a trip to Rome a few years ago, he suggested I read it while I was there. I like Dan Brown’s writing.

    • I love ANGELS AND DEMONS too, but I my favourite book of is THE DA VINCI CODE. I remember I read it in one go because I couldn’t stop reading it. It made my insomnia worse & I got sick afterwards so I’ll never forget it. :D
Wow, reading ANGELS AND DEMONS while in Italy sounds divine. You really got into the atmosphere!
Me, too! I like Dan Brown’s writing. Thanks for dropping by my blog & commenting. :)

      • Angels & Demons was fantastic as well Da Vinci Code. Dan Brown has a style of writing that makes me want to keep turning the page. There’s a certain formula to these books which made me figure out the twist in Lost Symbol immediately, which took away from the surprise but still worth the read. It’s amazing how Brown puts all these mysteries, history and art together.

      • My thoughts exactly! I still think that The DA VINCI CODE was his best work yet. I enjoyed it immensely & reading it was such an unforgettable experience. I totally agree that Brown is amazing in his skill of putting mystery, history, & art together. Reading his books is such a fantastic way to learn new things I would otherwise won’t put any effort of knowing if it isn’t written the way he wrote it. Thanks for dropping by my blog & commenting. I greatly appreciate it. Take care! :)
